Tourba, ThriveAgric Target 27,200 Hectares Carbon Farming With New Initiative

Nigeria’s agricultural sector is set for a major transformation as Tourba, a global nature-based carbon project developer, and ThriveAgric, a leading agri-tech platform, have partnered to scale conservation agriculture and carbon farming across key regions of the country.

Announcing the partnership in Abuja, both organisations said the initiative aims to accelerate the adoption of climate-smart farming among smallholders, enhance soil fertility, improve food security, and generate certified carbon credits.

Under the agreement, ThriveAgric will help onboard thousands of farmers into Tourba’s carbon farming programme, targeting 27,200 hectares across the 2025 dry and wet seasons. The project will also establish 100 demonstration plots in Kaduna, Kano, and Bauchi States to train farmers in sustainable practices such as crop diversification, soil conservation, and agroforestry.

Tourba’s country manager, Opeoluwa Odunayo Filani, described the partnership as a landmark step toward building a climate-resilient agricultural system in Nigeria. “This partnership strengthens our mission to scale conservation agriculture while ensuring farmers receive the tools and training they need to build climate resilience. By combining ThriveAgric’s reach with Tourba’s technical expertise, we are laying the foundation for a truly impactful carbon farming programme.”

Tourba’s carbon farming initiative enables farmers to adopt conservation agriculture techniques that improve productivity and capture carbon in soil, generating verified credits that can be traded for income. The company, with a portfolio of over 300,000 hectares across the Global South, has listed projects in Nigeria and Brazil on the Verra Registry under the VM0042 v2.1 methodology — a globally recognised certification standard for carbon projects.

ThriveAgric, which has empowered more than one million farmers across Nigeria and other African countries, said the collaboration expands its mission of improving livelihoods through sustainable practices. “By integrating conservation agriculture, we are ensuring farmers benefit directly from climate action while contributing to national food security,” the company said.

Tourba said its long-term goal is to reach six million hectares across Africa and South America, advancing agricultural resilience and climate action through innovation, technology, and farmer-led solutions.
