Following the report by the Nigeria Police Force, Lagos State Command, that declared human rights activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, wanted, he has stated that he plans to meet with the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Jimoh Moshood, soon.

Sowore, who stated this on his social media handle, noted that he had called the Lagos State commissioner several times, but CP Jimoh refused to pick up his calls.

Sowore, who confirmed the development on his social media handles, said despite several attempts to reach the commissioner to clarify the matter, his calls had gone unanswered.

According to him, “The Lagos Police Commissioner, Moshood Jimoh, has reportedly declared me ‘wanted’ for ‘disturbance of public peace’, allegedly as a result of his officers’ inability to execute a ‘shoot on sight’ order given by his illegal IGP, Kayode Egbetokun, in Oworonsoki today.

“Despite my repeated attempts to contact Nigeria Police Force Commissioner Jimoh, he has not taken my calls; nevertheless, I plan to meet with him soon to address his declaration.”

Recall that the CP declared Sowore wanted over what he described as “public disturbance” linked to protests against the illegal demolition of houses in the Oworonshoki community, Lagos.

There were also media reports that the police clamped down on protesting residents in Oworonshoki, Lagos State, who were demonstrating over the alleged illegal demolition of residential buildings in the community.

The protesters, mostly displaced families, were chanting solidarity songs and demanding that the government halt further demolitions and provide alternative shelter.

Earlier, police officers fired teargas canisters to disperse residents and activists who had gathered to protest what they called the “illegal and inhuman demolition” of their homes by officials of the Lagos State Government. The protest on Monday was led by the Take It Back movement.“He is riding in a vehicle and he is making a video that police have covered everywhere and he can’t come down, It is the same way police cover everywhere that he came down in Abuja. Let him come down here and he will see the wrath of people that will equally be enforced on him.” the commissioner said.

Jimoh revealed that police had already made arrests in connection with the matter.

While defending the government action in the affected neighbourhood, the commissioner said residents of Oworonshoki had been compensated and were living in peace.
