The newly-appointed chairman of the West African Joint Tasks Force, Prof Muhammad Kailani, has urged President Bola Tinubu to issue a one-year performance deadline to Nigeria’s security service chiefs.

Kailani made the call over the weekend in Abuja during a joint press conference with the Office of the Special Envoy, West Africa International Human Rights Protection Service in collaboration with the Civilian Joint Task Force.

He said the security chiefs must sign an undertaking to work closely with the CJTF to end insecurity within a year, insisting that failure to deliver should result in their resignation.

According to him, “If they don’t do it, they should resign. We will bring in another group to do the job.”

The envoy also formally presented a Certificate of Partnership to Kailani, noting that his appointment marked a new phase of security collaboration across West Africa.

Kailani said the new responsibility would strengthen efforts to protect lives and property, stressing that the task force would enforce discipline, honesty, sincerity and humility in its operations.

He vowed that the CJTF and its partners would continue deploying technology, surveillance and intelligence-driven strategies, including AI and CCTV across identified porous border points.

He lamented instances where intelligence provided to security agencies was ignored, describing it as “discouraging and demoralising.”

“We know their locations. If we are given the opportunity, we will crush them,” he said.

The Special Envoy to West Africa for the International Human Rights Protection Service, Ambassador Charles Omini, urged security agencies to adopt advanced technology and deeper collaboration, warning that no single agency could win the fight against insecurity.

He emphasised the need for dialogue, unity and a return to Nigeria’s founding values of peace and progress.

“The killings must stop. The kidnapping must stop. Enough is enough,” Omini declared.

He appealed to all security stakeholders to embrace a strategic, coordinated approach to end insecurity nationwide.
