The Bauchi State government has approved the renaming of the Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy Alkaleri (BOGAA) to Oil and Gas Academy Alkaleri, Bauchi State (OGABS) as part of efforts to enhance the institution’s visibility, global competitiveness, and professional standing.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Natural Resources Development, Hon. Muhammad Maiwada, during a press briefing held at the ministry’s conference hall.

According to the commissioner, the former name, Bauchi Oil and Gas Academy Alkaleri positioned ‘Bauchi’ as the primary point of reference, which unintentionally portrayed the academy as a strictly local institution. The new name, Oil and Gas Academy Alkaleri, Bauchi State (OGABS), is designed to reflect a more professional, government-owned training centre with wider relevance and stronger international appeal.

The commissioner said the renaming is part of broader reforms aimed at aligning the institution with national and global standards in oil and gas education. It is expected to boost the academy’s prospects for partnerships, attract funding, and expand opportunities for students, industry professionals, and potential collaborators both within Nigeria and globally.

Muhammad further explained that the new identity strengthens the academy’s brand visibility, enhances recognition in international engagements, and underscores Bauchi State’s commitment to developing a skilled workforce that can support Nigeria’s evolving energy sector.

The Commissioner announced the approval of Shehu Muhammad (Mammaji), a former Chief Superintendent of Customs, as the new Chief Security Officer of the Academy.

Hon. Maiwada reaffirmed the academy’s dedication to delivering world-class capacity-building programmes, technical training, and professional development tailored to empower young people and advance Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

He conveyed the appreciation of the academy and the supervising ministry to Governor of Bauchi State Bala Mohammed, for his continuous support.

He also commended the state legislature for the timely consideration of the renaming bill and prayed for continued progress for the academy, Bauchi State, and Nigeria at large.
