West Africa Gears Up For Historic Para Games In Abeokuta

The city of Abeokuta is set to host a landmark event as it prepares to welcome the inaugural West Africa Para Games, marking a significant milestone in regional sporting cooperation and inclusion.
This event represents a collective advancement for West Africa, characterised by unity and a celebration of Para athletic excellence.

Dignitaries, including Mr. Samson Deen, President of the African Paralympic Committee (AfPC), will attend the opening ceremony, reinforcing ties among African nations and inspiring renewed commitment to enhancing opportunities for Para athletes throughout the continent.

Sunday Odebode, Head of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria, stated that Abeokuta will warmly welcome delegations from across the sub-region.

For the first time, West African nations will convene under a unified multi-sport Para event, aimed at elevating performance pathways, fostering collaboration, and showcasing the extraordinary talent of athletes who continue to break barriers.

The Games hold particular significance, coinciding with the growing recognition and organisation of Para sport in West Africa on the global stage. The presence of elite athletes, technical officials, and national leaders reflects a shared commitment to establishing sustainable systems that empower individuals with disabilities through sport.

For eight thrilling days, Abeokuta will become the heart of West Africa’s Para sports renaissance, with the event aligning with Nigeria’s strategic push to expand its sports economy, a vision championed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The iconic Moshood Abiola Sports Arena will host the Games from 26 November to 4 December, providing world-class facilities that affirm Abeokuta’s status as a rising sports capital in Africa.
