Legendary midfielder Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha has issued a stark warning to the current Super Eagles, pinpointing chronic inconsistency as the fatal flaw that must be eradicated if the team is to challenge for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.
His intervention comes with the Nigerian football scene still reeling from the profound disappointment of failing to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a failure that Okocha believes was a direct consequence of the team’s unpredictable form.
The recently concluded World Cup qualifying campaign served as a painful case study. Over ten matches, the Super Eagles managed just four victories, drawing five and suffering a single, but historically damning, defeat to Benin Republic. That loss marked the first time Nigeria had ever been beaten by the Cheetahs in a competitive fixture, symbolizing a dramatic fall from grace.
However, it was the failure to secure what should have been routine victories that truly exposed the team’s fragility. Stunning home draws against footballing minnows Lesotho and Zimbabwe raised alarm bells, revealing a team that could compete with the continent’s best on one day, yet stumble against its weakest on another.
This erratic form saw Nigeria finish second in their group behind South Africa, forcing them into the precarious continental play-off route.
Even with a second chance, the pattern of inconsistency persisted. A hard-fought, dramatic 4-1 extra-time victory over Gabon suggested a team finding its resolve. Yet, days later, that promise evaporated in a penalty shoot-out defeat to the Democratic Republic of Congo, confirming Nigeria’s absence from a second consecutive World Cup.
In an interview, Okocha dissected this turbulent period, stating, “Nigeria’s run in the World Cup qualifiers was a rollercoaster, but we would have loved to see Nigeria qualify with ease.” He continued, “We all know football is not an easy game, and what I think they should improve on is to be more consistent.
They need to stick to winning with top performance in every game. That is the standard for a nation like ours.”
The upcoming AFCON 2025 presents a critical opportunity for redemption. The Super Eagles arrived in Morocco on the back of a commendable runner-up finish at the 2023 edition in Ivory Coast, a performance that had temporarily restored pride. However, that goodwill has been severely tested by the recent World Cup qualifying debacle, and expectations are now laced with a heavy dose of skepticism.
The team has been handed a seemingly manageable group, drawn alongside Tunisia, Uganda, and Tanzania. Yet, as the World Cup qualifiers proved, no game can be taken for granted. All eyes will be on coach Eric Chelle, who faces the immense pressure of harnessing the squad’s undeniable talent—often hailed as one of Africa’s most gifted—and forging it into a unit capable of delivering results with machine-like reliability.
The message from one of Nigeria’s greatest-ever players is clear: talent alone is no longer enough. For the Super Eagles to truly soar again, they must find a consistency of performance that has been their missing piece.
