The South-South Zone of the National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) has concluded its 2025 Unity Convention with renewed calls for improved leadership, strengthened security measures, and urgent intervention in critical infrastructure across the region.

The convention which had the theme; “Building a Future of Technical Excellence Through Leadership and Innovation” was held at National Institute of Construction Technology and Management (NICTM), Uromi, Edo State from 30th – 31st October, 2025.

The event, which was organised by the Convention Planning Committee chairman, Comrade Yahaya Zika, brought together executives, senators, aspirants, and student stakeholders from polytechnics, monotechnics, and institutes of technology across the six South-South states.

A communique signed by Comrade Vincent Jerus, quoted the NAPS National President, Comrade Eshiofune Oghayan Paul (SHOPRITE), as saying that, the historic contributions of the South-South to Nigeria’s democratic evolution, including the contributions of notable Nigerians such as Anthony Enahoro and Dele Giwa should be an inspiration to Nigerian youth.

He urged “aspirants and newly elected zonal leaders to uphold the principles of student activism and remain committed to service in line with the ideas of visionaries who built the political structures that have continued to sustain the region”.

The NAPS President also expressed concern over the “rising cases of kidnapping and general insecurity nationwide, calling for heightened vigilance within campuses and appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to intensify efforts aimed at restoring safety, particularly in the South-South region”.

Furthermore, the association commended the Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, “for ongoing infrastructural and educational development in the state”, but urged the governor to “declare a state of emergency on dilapidated roads, beginning with Uromi and extending across the state.

“For us a student body, the failing road networks continue to impose hardship on residents and students. Concerted efforts should be made to transform Edo State into a continuous construction zone to remedy the situation”, the communique noted.

Highlight of the convention was the accreditation of delegates as well as the election of convention executives. In line with the NAPS constitution, the outgoing zonal executives and appointees were dissolved to allow the emergence of a new leadership.

Those elected to lead the South-South Zone included: Comrade Orji Abraham as Coordinator; Comrade Igbeni Miracle Oluchukwu as Secretary; Comrade Anthony Oisagbai as Public Relations Officer; Comrade Igiekhume Sherifah Nyra as Director of Gender; and Comrade Ahmed Amidu as Director of Special Duties.

Additional appointments included Comrade Onome Ogboro as Director of Humanitarian Services, Comrade Momodu Nefisat as Director of NetFund, and Comrade Momoh Maryam (Firstlady) as Chairperson of Programs and Planning.
