The Kano State Police Command has debunked claims that a suspected kidnapper popularly known as “Ali Kwara” was recently arrested, following the circulation of a viral video on social media.
In a statement on Thursday, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the Kano State Command, SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, stated that the video being shared online is old footage recorded in 2019 during a public interview at the Bompai Police Headquarters in Kano.
According to Kiyawa, the interview was conducted by journalists in Kano and led by the late Abubakar Dahiru Yakasai, alongside the then Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, CP Balarabe Sule (retired).
“The suspect, “Ali Kwara,” was arrested in 2019 at Diga, Panshekara Quarters, Kano, in connection with a series of kidnappings and armed robberies. During the investigation, the suspect voluntarily confessed to his involvement in these criminal activities. The video was part of a public briefing aimed at updating the public on the Command’s efforts in tackling crime.”
While acknowledging public concerns over the resurfaced video, the police cautioned against the spread of misleading information that could cause fear and panic.
The Commissioner of Police in the State, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to safeguarding lives and property and urged residents to verify information before sharing it.
He also appealed to the public for continued support by reporting suspicious movements and activities to the nearest police station.
