The Nigeria Integrated Water Resources Management Commission (NIWRMC) and the Kano State Water Board (KSWB) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Abuja aimed at improving water governance and ensuring sustainable service delivery across the state.

At the ceremony held at the commission’s headquarters, the executive director of NIWRMC, Dr Abdulmumini Aminu-Zaria, said the collaboration between federal and state governments would ensure that water abstraction, groundwater development, pollution control, and service delivery are coordinated sustainably.

He described the partnership as a step forward in the national drive for Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).

Aminu-Zaria added, “Our collaboration will help develop a reliable reporting system and support strategies that protect both water quantity and quality for present and future generations.”

He also highlighted that NIWRMC is undergoing institutional reforms to strengthen governance and stakeholder engagement in the water sector.

According to him, the MoU will harmonize regulatory mandates, streamline data exchange, and reinforce monitoring and enforcement mechanisms in Kano State, improving compliance with national water regulations and promoting transparency in water-use licensing.

In response, Kano State Commissioner for Water Resources, Haruna Umar Doguwa, emphasised the state government’s commitment to providing potable water to residents.

He said, “There is a need to collaborate with NIWRMC to regulate water sources in Kano State.

This MoU will serve as a guiding tool and a significant advantage for the state.”
