Nigeria’s First Lady, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu, has disbursed the sum of N50 million to 250 persons with disabilities in Nasarawa State.
With the amount, each beneficiary went home with the sum of N200,000.
The disbursement took place during the launch of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) Economic Empowerment Programme for Persons with Disabilities, under RHI Social Investment Programme yesterday in Lafia, the state capital.
The event which coincided with the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, attracted persons with disabilities from across the 13 local government areas of the state.
“Our nation grows stronger when every individual is empowered to contribute meaningfully. As, Helen Keller, the renowned American disability rights advocate, once said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” These words remind us that a truly inclusive society is built when we stand together, creating opportunities that empower everyone to contribute their unique gifts to our collective progress,” she said.
She noted that the gesture was aimed at supporting small business owners to recapitalise and strengthen their means of livelihood.
“In total, 9,500 persons with disabilities across Nigeria will benefit from this programme, amounting to N1.9 billion,” she said.
The first lady explained that the programme aligned with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which seeks to promote inclusive growth and shared prosperity by ensuring that no Nigerian is left behind, especially those whose needs are often overlooked.
“It is worth noting that, over the past two years, the Renewed Hope Initiative has supported over one hundred thousand (100,000) women petty traders and small business owners, including persons with disabilities, with direct financial grants to grow their businesses,” Mrs Tinubu added.
Also, the wife of the Nasarawa State Governor, Hajiya Silifat Abdullahi Sule, thanked Mrs Tinubu for standing by the underprivileged and vulnerable members of the society through the various programmes aimed at enhancing their standard of living.
She urged the beneficiaries to utilise the money for the purpose it was meant, even as she called on Nigerians to support the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s administration through positive engagement and prayers to deliver more dividends of democracy to them.
