Google has released its 2025 Year in Search report for Nigeria, revealing that Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan and footballer Eberechi Eze, topped the list of the most searched Nigerian personalities this year.
The yearly report highlights what Nigerians were most interested in across various categories, including breaking news, influential figures, entertainment, questions, and lifestyle trends.
According to the report, Nigerians this year turned to Search to keep up with a rapidly evolving news cycle.
It disclosed that prominent figures attracted strong attention, with Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan ranking as the most searched Nigerian personality, underscoring the central role of political discussions throughout the year.
In addition to local developments, Nigerians closely followed major international events, with the Israel-Iran war and the US elections ranking highly in online searches.
Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Affairs Manager for West Africa, said the 2025 Year in Search reflects not just statistics, but the real issues and moments that captured Nigerians’ attention.
“The 2025 Year in Search is more than just data; it’s a vibrant, unfiltered mirror of our collective attention.
“Whether it’s tracking the biggest headlines, reflecting on the legacies of icons we lost, or simply figuring out the latest slang, these lists show that Nigerians are using Search to actively engage with the world around them,” he said.
The report further revealed that Nigerians showed strong interest in a broad range of personalities from politics, entertainment, sports, and global pop culture.
Locally, figures such as Akpoti-Uduaghan, Eberechi Eze, Governor Sim Fubara, Chika Ike, Mr Eazi, Kemi Adetiba, Hilda Baci, VDM, and Priscilla Ojo attracted significant attention.
On the international front, interest was driven by names like Gyokeres, Garnacho, João Pedro, Aaron Pierre, and Tyler Perry.
Entertainers also featured strongly in 2025 searches, with Aaron Pierre, Chika Ike, Juma Jux, Mr Eazi, and Kemi Adetiba appearing among the most searched in that category.
There was also rising curiosity around the meaning of certain words, especially ‘Achalugo’, ‘allegedly’, and ‘Labubu’.
In comparison, 2024’s top searches centered around Bobrisky, while musicians such as Shallipopi and Khaid dominated attention in the music space.
Major news searches during that period included the US elections, the new national anthem, and the national grid, reflecting public interest in political and economic issues.
In 2025, Nigerians also used Google Search to keep up with major deaths, cultural trends, and viral discussions spanning politics, entertainment, and technology. Search trends peaked following the deaths of prominent figures including former President Muhammadu Buhari, Pope Francis, and public personalities such as Diogo Jota and Charlie Kirk.
Other major topics that dominated the news category in 2025 included the Club World Cup, Diogo Jota, former President Buhari, Charlie Kirk, and the iPhone 17.
People also relied on Search to find answers to trending questions, including “Who is Charlie Kirk?”, “Who is the new pope?”, and to better understand terms such as “What is state of emergency?”, “What is war crime?”, and “What is Labubu?”
The report indicates that Nigerians are no longer just consuming information passively, but actively using Search to understand events, question narratives, and stay connected to both local and global conversations.
