President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and nationalist, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, describing him as the embodiment of a century-long commitment to Nigeria’s freedom, democracy, and national unity.

In a statement personally signed by him on Thursday, the President honoured the centenarian ahead of his 100th birthday on December 5, calling him the “last man standing” among the early freedom fighters who challenged colonial repression and helped lay the foundation for Nigeria’s independence.

Tinubu noted that despite humble beginnings in Kano City, Yakasai charted a purposeful life defined by courage, activism, and unwavering dedication to the nation. Provoked by the injustices of colonial rule, Yakasai joined the frontline of the liberation movement in his youth, deploying his energy as a freedom fighter, journalist, and political activist.

He aligned with the Northern Elements Progressive Union (NEPU) under the visionary leadership of Mallam Aminu Kano, contributing to a massive grassroots mobilisation that awakened political consciousness across Northern Nigeria and strengthened the push for independence.

“Of the noble men and women who stood firm for our liberty and freedom from repressive colonial subjugation, Alhaji Tanko Yakasai is the last man standing,” Tinubu said. “In celebrating Baba Yakasai today, I am celebrating a century of dedicated service to freedom and democracy and many years of supporting me and the progressive cause.”

The President recalled Yakasai’s post-independence contributions, including his service as a Commissioner in Kano State under Military Governor Audu Bako and later as Special Assistant on National Assembly Liaison to President Shehu Shagari during the Second Republic.

Tinubu described the elder statesman as a consensus builder who has consistently championed national cohesion, peaceful coexistence, and democratic consolidation through the decades.

Even in old age, Tinubu said Yakasai remained an inspiring voice of stability and patriotic counsel.

“I am pleased to join family, friends and associates to celebrate the life and commitment of Alhaji Tanko Yakasai as he turns 100,” the President added.
