A member representing Ikwo/Ezza-South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Chinedu Ogah, has requested that the contractors handling the Abakaliki–Ikwo–Oferekpe–Obubara Road project return to the site immediately.

Ogah, who is the chairman of the House Committee on Reformatory Institutions, called for an investigation into the stalled construction of the road, adding that the Ebonyi State government had initially awarded the project before it was taken over by the federal government.

Ogah moved a motion of urgent public importance on the floor of the House yesterday, calling for the immediate return of contractors to the site and an investigation into the abandonment of the project.

He said the road was a critical national asset and formed an essential socio-economic corridor, linking Ebonyi State to Cross River State and extending to Cameroon.

The lawmaker expressed concern that the abandonment of the project had resulted in the tragic loss of over 25 lives due to dangerous excavations and uncompleted portions of the road.

He lamented that the deplorable state of the road had worsened insecurity, caused severe distress to commuters and contributed to economic decline in adjoining communities.

Ogah stated that the road had deteriorated into a death trap and a breeding ground for robbery and other criminal activities, adding that the abandonment of critical infrastructure had become a recurring issue nationwide and must be urgently addressed.

He appealed to the House to mandate its Committees on Works and Legislative Compliance to ensure strict supervision of the contractors when they return to the site.
