Detained Whistleblower Nnamdi Emeh Wins Global Award In Anambra Prison

A Nigerian whistleblower, Nnamdi Emeh, currently detained at the Anambra Correctional Centre, has been honoured with an international whistleblowing award for courage in exposing human rights abuses and police corruption.

Emeh, a 26-year-old information technology specialist, was among global recipients of the Blueprint for Free Speech 2025 Whistleblowing Prize, announced on December 3, 2025, by the Australia-based organisation. The annual awards recognise individuals who risk their lives and freedom to expose wrongdoing in government and corporations.

Other honourees this year included whistleblowers who exposed corruption and abuses within Meta, Ecuador’s armed forces, and South Africa’s state training institution.

However, while his peers celebrated their recognition on stage, Emeh remained behind bars, nearly three years after his arrest for allegedly leaking information that implicated senior police officers in kidnapping, extortion, torture, and organ harvesting in Anambra State.

Emeh’s troubles began during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year in 2022, when he served as an IT consultant to the Anambra Rapid Response Squad (RRS). He was tasked with assisting police in tracking criminals through technology.

In February 2023, a blog, Gistlover, published explosive allegations against a senior officer, Patrick Agbazue, accusing him of heinous crimes, including extrajudicial killings and selling organs of detainees. The Police Service Commission later opened an investigation, detaining Agbazue and transferring him to Abuja for questioning.

Soon after the publication, Emeh was accused of being the source of the leak. His identity was exposed online, forcing him to flee to neighbouring Benin Republic, where he was arrested in March 2023 on an Interpol Red Notice and extradited to Nigeria.

The police charged him with 12 offences, including money laundering, defamation, illegal possession of firearms, hacking, and transferring ₦47 million from an account belonging to one Chibuike Martins Ekwueme.

In 2023, Justice F.O. Riman of the Federal High Court granted him bail in the sum of ₦50 million with two sureties of like sum, but the conditions proved nearly impossible to fulfil.

Emeh’s lawyer, Justus Ijeomah, accused police and court officials of deliberately frustrating his client’s bail process.

“When we wanted to perfect the bail, we discovered the police held his passport, which was needed for court deposit. The court ordered its release, but while we were processing the bail, Justice Riman unfortunately passed away, stalling the matter,” Ijeomah said.
“After that, the Deputy Chief Registrar became a stumbling block, and I had to write a petition before leaving the case for a Senior Advocate.”

Emeh’s counsel added that his client denied leaking any information to the blog, describing the claims as “mere speculation.”

Speaking to our correspondent, Emeh’s father, Prof. Ikechukwu Emeh, said the family was overwhelmed by both joy and sorrow, joy for his son’s global recognition, and sorrow that he remains in prison despite a valid court order granting bail.

“I’m happy about the award because it allows the world to know what is going on with my son and this rotten society,” the professor said.

He described the family’s ordeal as “harrowing”, revealing that they had spent over ₦10 million trying to secure sureties, while police repeatedly blocked the court’s release orders.

“We are completely impoverished. I’m now suffering from high blood pressure, and so is my wife. We are devastated,” he said.

“In May 2024, the judge signed his release order after we met the bail conditions, but the police prosecutor came to court and blocked it.”

Prof. Emeh also noted that the police never accused his son of providing false information, a detail he said “speaks volumes.”

Civil rights groups have condemned Emeh’s continued detention, describing it as a grave abuse of the judicial process.

Okechukwu Nwanguma, Executive Director of the Rule of Law and Accountability Advocacy Centre (RULAAC), said the police turned against a whistleblower who exposed corruption instead of probing the accused officers.

“Instead of investigating the allegations of extrajudicial killings, organ harvesting, and extortion, the police turned their machinery against the messenger,” Nwanguma said.

“What followed was systematic abuse, trumped-up charges, manipulation of court processes, transfer across multiple detention facilities, and disobedience of court orders. His prolonged incarceration, despite meeting bail conditions, is clearly an attempt to silence him and protect those implicated.”

He added that Nigeria’s whistleblower protection system was “virtually non-existent,” especially for those exposing wrongdoing within security agencies.

The Executive Director of Blueprint for Free Speech, Dr. Suelette Dreyfus, called on the Nigerian government to immediately comply with court orders and release Emeh.

“We call for the immediate release of Nnamdi Emeh in accordance with judicial orders issued by Nigerian courts,” she said.
“We are not pronouncing on the veracity of the allegations made, but the safety of whistleblowers who reveal wrongdoing in the public interest is of paramount importance.”

She urged the authorities to investigate threats against Emeh’s life and ensure his safety both in custody and upon release.

“Many unanswered questions remain in this case, but Nigeria must protect, not persecute, those who expose corruption,” Dreyfus added.

Nearly three years after the scandal broke, the findings of the investigation into the alleged atrocities by police officers in Anambra remain undisclosed. Sources told our correspondent that some of the implicated officers are still in active service.

Efforts to reach the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, for comment were unsuccessful as calls and messages sent to his phone line were not returned as of press time.
