Yuletide: NGO Empowers Over 200 Widows In FCT

A non-governmental organisation, Global Youth Skills Acquisition and Poverty Eradication Organisation (GYSAPEO), has empowered over 200 widows from the six area councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) as part of its efforts to alleviate the high level of poverty in the region.

The NGO’s goal is to empower youths, women, and children through skills acquisition, mentorship, and various development programs aimed at reducing poverty and creating jobs.

The event aimed to demonstrate that widows can live lives free of violence and abuse, with dignity and respect, while highlighting the importance of understanding their conditions and supporting them to live the life they desire.

Speaking at the event, Ambassador Dr Emmanuel Chuks Ozegbe, CEO of GYSAPEO, announced that the organisation had empowered over 200 women with free food items to help sustain their families. He encouraged widows to remain hopeful, emphasising that every widow is essential to the foundation, especially during critical times.

He added that while the NGO initially planned to empower over 150 women in 2024, the number had now increased to over 2,000, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to creating meaningful impact.

Dr Ozegbe remarked, “Difficult circumstances may have affected your lives, but how you respond will determine your path forward. For Christians, God is particularly mindful of widows. The Bible says that tears may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning. God does not forget your children, your family, and your provision. He will sustain you, even in uncertain times.”

He further stated that the smiles of the widows serve as motivation for the organisation to continue its work, pledging that the foundation would continue to support widows as long as God grants them the strength.

Similarly, Vice Chairman of the Advisory Committee, Farida Blessing Anwar, urged widows to maintain faith, stating, “With God, all things are possible. Keep hope alive. We are committed to supporting widows anytime, anywhere.”

Anwar also highlighted that GYSAPEO’s support extends beyond festive giveaways: “We provide training, start-up business packages, and continuous mentorship. This initiative is not only to assist widows but also to celebrate them during the festive season, including Christmas and New Year.”
