The Kwara State House of Assembly, on Thursday, suspended the member representing Edu Constituency, Hon, Saba Yisa Gideon, for three months.
The House said Gideon was found to have recorded a closed‑door meeting of the House and shared the audio with an unauthorised person.
According to the debate on the matter at plenary, Gideon confessed to committing the offence.
The motion, moved without notice by the leader of the House, Hon. Abdulkadir Magaji, suggested suspension of Gideon, citing Order 4, Rule 14 of the House’s privileges rules and Section 14(2) of the Legislative Houses (Powers and Privileges) Act 2017, to butteress his point.
Other members who contributed to the debate included Hon. Ganiyu Salaudeen (Omupo constituency), Hon. Musa Kareem (Patigi constituency), Hon. Owolabi Rasaq (Share/Oke-ode constituency), Hon. Abdullahi Danbaba (Kaiama/Kemanji/Wajibe constituency) and Hon. Oniboki Yunusa (Afon constituency).
In its resolution, the House said the unauthorised recording of a closed-door meeting by Gideon “is capable of bringing the legislative institution to disrepute” and that Gideon’s actions amounted to contempt and a breach of privilege.
The House also ordered the suspended lawmaker to write a formal letter of apology to the House within the suspension period.
“Gideon’s suspension takes effect immediately,” the House added.
