The worlds of online celebrity and professional boxing collide this Friday night in Miami as YouTube sensation Jake Paul steps into the ring with former heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua. The highly anticipated bout, which will stream globally on Netflix, underscores a seismic shift in modern boxing, where digital fame increasingly rivals traditional punching power.

Paul, a cruiserweight stepping up in class, aims to solidify his controversial boxing career against the 36-year-old Briton. Joshua, whose career has seen a concerning decline since his shock defeat to Andy Ruiz in 2019, suffered a recent setback, being knocked down four times en route to losing an IBF heavyweight title bout against Daniel Dubois in September 2024.

Channelling the legendary Muhammad Ali, Paul declared, “It’s boxing skill, boxing on the outside. He’s obviously going to come forward, bring the pressure, be the bigger man. And it’s just being slick, float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.”

While boxing legend Ali himself engaged in lucrative, unconventional bouts, the sport’s current landscape, driven by massive paydays and streaming platforms, would be a new world even to him. Joshua is reportedly set to earn $50 million plus bonuses for the fight, a testament to the colossal financial draw of such crossover events.

The Netflix audience is expected to be a diverse mix, from ardent boxing purists keen to assess Joshua’s remaining prowess to Paul’s youthful online fanbase. Joshua noted the broad appeal, stating, “I heard people say, ‘oh, I’m not really into boxing, but I’m watching this fight.’ But no one’s really coming up to me saying anything about Jake, or they want me to knock him out. Just positive vibes.”
Paul’s boxing journey has seen him face a roster of non-boxers, including former basketball player Nate Robinson and retired MMA fighters Ben Askren, Tyron Woodley, and Anderson Silva, alongside a bizarre exhibition with 57-year-old Mike Tyson.

However, Swedish heavyweight Otto Wallin, who previously fought Joshua, warned Reuters of the former champion’s formidable power, suggesting Paul could face serious injury. Joshua himself acknowledged the inherent dangers, stating, “When you’re in that ring, it’s a dangerous place to be, and anything can happen… You hope your opponent leaves the ring safely, but if they don’t, you know, you still have to go to bed knowing that you’ve just done your job.”

Despite the perceived disparity in skill and experience, Paul remains confident. “I believe he (Joshua) is locked in and knows that this could potentially be the biggest loss, and will be the big loss of his career, and he has so much to lose in this fight,” Paul asserted.
