A non-governmental organisation, Dorcas Sustainable Global Initiative, in collaboration with Jane Cares Foundation (Agudo Global), has empowered about 3,500 widows and indigent people in Enugu State.
The empowerment, which has spanned eight years, is part of the efforts of the group to improve their economic well-being, promote self-reliance and support the state government.
The event, which was held last Thursday, was part of activities marking the celebration of eight years of support and empowerment of widows and the needy in the society.
It featured the distribution of food items, wrappers, drugs and other items to beneficiaries, many of whom are struggling to cater for their families due to economic hardship.
Overcome with emotion, a widow said to be 154 years old, Elizabeth Arum from Akegbe Amagu Ugwu, almost broke down in tears while narrating how life had been a daily struggle, adding that the support rekindled the hope she thought was long gone.
At the event, the convener of Dorcas Sustainable Global Initiative, Hon Adaora Ginika Aneke hinted that the initiative was designed to restore hope and dignity to widows who are often marginalised in society.
She disclosed that they have so far taken care of over 3,500 widows and indigent ones without fail, even with the prevailing economic downturn.
