A non-profit organisation, Hopewell Rose Foundation (HRF), has launched its “Mama Care Initiative” to provide essential care and resources to pregnant women and new mothers.
In an interview with journalists in Abuja, Akpevweoghene Joan Jessa, country representative and project manager of HRF, said the foundation’s mission is to address the lack of the necessary tools and support during childbirth.
“We are here at Wuse General Hospital to help and put smiles on these pregnant women. Our Mama Care Initiative is designed to provide support and resources to women who cannot afford the hospital kits and other essential needs,” she said.
She emphasised that the foundation is currently self-funded, but hopes to receive government support to continue to expand its projects.
“We run this initiative monthly, and it’s a work in progress with funding to support both pregnant women, women who have given birth, and the hospitals, too,” she added.
She emphasised that the foundation also offers skills acquisition training for women, equipping them with various skills to enhance their livelihoods, and planned to expand its reach globally.
“The founder, Mrs Tonte Abban, has been instrumental in driving the organisation’s projects and initiatives, but we need more hands in terms of funding to support our women in the country,” Jessa said
Comrade Leo Benjamin, spokesperson for the foundation, emphasised that HRF has achieved 45% of its target goals and is seeking collaboration with the federal government, well-meaning Nigerians, and the private sector to raise funds to achieve its goals.
One beneficiary, a pregnant woman who declined to be named, expressed her gratitude to the foundation. “Bringing a child into the world is something to be proud of, but some women cannot afford the hospital kits as demanded. We really appreciate the foundation’s gesture, especially during this festive season,” she said.
