A medical expert in the Department of Community Medicine, Osun State University, Dr Oyelola Adeoye, has attributed most sudden deaths by seemingly agile people to a care-free attitude toward their health conditions.
Adeoye, who delivered a lecture titled “Your Health and Your Responsibility” as part of the activities for the year-end 2025 programmes of Christ Apostolic Church (CAC), Oluwasogo, Glorious District, Osogbo, said slumping doesn’t happen without warning signals that were ignored.
Apparently worried by recent occurrences of sudden untimely deaths at awkward places, Dr Adeoye noted that a lot of health challenges that claim lives can be averted if Nigerians would give priority to their lives and take responsibility for their health and that of others around them.
She warned that money may not save a rich patient who fails to be proactive about what appears to be a minor ailment that is allowed to develop into a serious condition due to the victim’s lackadaisical attitude, adding that kidney, liver, and other organ failures don’t occur without warning signs.
To maintain a healthy lifestyle, medical experts recommend periodic medical checkups, reducing fat and salt intake, drinking at least three bottles of water or five sachets of water daily, regular exercise, and screening for blood sugar and urine, among other measures, at least once a year.
She advised people especially the well to do ones to avoid living by context of what people says: “We may be digging our own grave when we live by the context of what people say to us or about us particularly in the area of taking walks, exercises careful dietary because when the consequences of failure to do the needful comes, we will be the one to pay for it”
Mrs Adeoye admonished Nigerians to be their brother’s keeper by speaking out when they observed deficiency in the health of their spouses, children, neighbours, co-workers, among others, adding that when they failed to do so, when the consequences knock, they will have their share.
