The Kano State Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Dr Hashim Suleiman Dungurawa, has stressed that neither the party’s national leadership nor its leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has approved any plans to defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Dungurawa described any planned defection to the APC as a betrayal of the people of Kano State who voted NNPP into power in the last general elections.
“It is a betrayal to the Kano people who elected this party. It is not proper to defeat a party in the last election and then go back and join that same party,” he said.
His remarks followed a rumour alleging that Governor Abba Yusuf and some NNPP members were preparing to defect to the APC.
Dungurawa said the party was aware of ongoing developments involving “some individuals” contemplating defection, but stated that the move does not have the backing of the party leadership.
“I want to make it clear that the Kano State party, the national leadership, and our National Leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, together with other leaders, do not approve of what is happening,” he stated.
According to him, efforts were made to persuade those involved to remain patient and stay within the party, in view of their responsibility to the NNPP and the people of Kano State.
“Our hope is that they will remain in this party in order to help those who are suffering and to improve education, agriculture, commerce, and other sectors, as provided for in our party’s constitution,” Dungurawa added.
The NNPP chairman also debunked claims that some party leaders, particularly the Deputy Governor, Senator Rufai Hanga, Sanusi Surajo and himself were working to pitch Governor Yusuf against Senator Kwankwaso, describing the allegations as baseless.
“We have never put anyone against our leader. If anyone has evidence, let them present it,” he said.
Dungurawa urged the public to disregard the rumours and continue with their lawful activities, warning party members against appending their names to documents allegedly being circulated by mischief makers.
