Former world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua has broken his silence following the car accident that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members in Nigeria.
On Sunday, Joshua shared his first public message since the tragedy across his social media platforms, posting emotional images of himself standing with the grieving families of late Ghami and Ayodele.
He captioned the photos, “My Brother’s Keeper ❤️🕊️❤️.”
The images show the former champion offering quiet support and solidarity to the bereaved families.
LEADERSHIP recalls that Joshua sustained minor injuries in the crash, which occurred on December 29 along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway and resulted in the deaths of his personal trainer, Kevin Latif Ayodele, and his strength and conditioning coach, Sina Ghami.
The 36-year-old boxer was treated and discharged from hospital on New Year’s Eve in Lagos before returning to the United Kingdom on Saturday.
Ghami and Ayodele, described as close friends and integral members of Joshua’s team, were scheduled to be laid to rest at a London mosque later this Sunday.
Meanwhile, the Nigerian police confirmed that Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, the driver of the vehicle involved in the crash, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving and operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s licence.
The charges were filed by the Ogun State Police Command on Friday.
A magistrate’s court adjourned the case until January 20. The defendant was granted bail in the sum of ₦5 million but remained in custody pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.
Although born in England, Joshua frequently visits his hometown of Sagamu in Ogun State. He was also in Nigeria last year, where he spent time with celebrities and presented President Bola Tinubu with a signed boxing glove.
The latest visit came just days after Joshua knocked out Jake Paul in an exhibition heavyweight bout at the Kaseya Center in Miami in December, 2025.
