Imo State Police Command has named Inspectors Charles Abaneke and Cordelia Aweleka as the officers who demanded a N100,000 bribe before documenting an alleged defilement case of a minor.

A 24-year-old male, Wisdom Onyeaju, now detained was accused of raping a minor during the Yuletide festivities in Umuekweye, Irete in the Owerri-West local government area.

The police spokesperson for Imo State Command, Henry Okoye, made the disclosure via the verified X handle dated January 5th, 2026.

Onyeaju was alleged to have defiled the minor who opted to stay indoors rather than watch masquerades alongside other family members.

Masquerade displays from several communities normally converge at a central location where they display their prowess and use it to raise money for their group. The displays add colour to the yuletide festivities and attract people even from outside the state and country.

According to Okoye, the state police commissioner, Aboki Danjuma, had met with the minor and her elder sister in Owerri.

He said, “The victim and her sister who made the viral video have both reported at the Imo State Police Command and met with the Commissioner of Police, following which the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) commenced discreet investigation.

The victim has been taken to the hospital for medical assessment, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend the suspect currently at large so that he can face the full wrath of the law.

“Meanwhile, the police officers alleged to have demanded money before attending to the case, namely; 1. Inspector Charles Abaneke 2. Inspector Aweleka Cordelia have been identified, detained, and are under investigation”, Okoye said.

Further, he assured of the Command’s zero tolerance for misconduct and assured the public that all those found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
