The Nigerian Society of Anaesthetists (NSA) says it is closely monitoring allegations of medical negligence surrounding the death of Nkanu Nnamdi, the 21-month-old son of renowned novelist Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.
The NSA National President, Prof. Alhassan Mohammed, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.
NAN reports that an official statement from the family said the toddler, whom Adichie had with her husband, Dr Ivara Esege, died on January 7 after a brief illness.
The statement, issued by Omawumi Ogbe of GLG Communications, said: “The family is devastated by this profound loss, and we request that their privacy be respected during this incredibly difficult time.”
However, days after the announcement, sources close to the family alleged that medical negligence at a private hospital in Lagos may have contributed to the child’s death. According to the sources, the boy had been taken to the hospital for medical procedures ahead of a scheduled medical evacuation to the United States for further treatment.
Reacting to the allegations, Prof. Mohammed said the hospital involved was likely to conduct its own internal investigation by reviewing both oral accounts and documented medical records.
“You know the patient will have a record, whether manual or electronic, which can be retrieved,” he said.
He added that an independent investigative panel could also be constituted, depending on whether the child’s mother or other family members decide to pursue the matter further.
According to him, any investigation would focus on verifying the registration status of the medical personnel and facility involved, compliance with approved scopes of practice, adherence to established medical protocols, and whether negligence played a role in the incident.
Mohammed said the NSA was awaiting more information before making further comments on the matter. (NAN)
