Scholars Dismiss Allegations Linking Gov Bala To Terrorism

Islamic scholars in Bauchi State have defended Governor Bala Mohammed against allegations linking him and his administration to the sponsorship of terrorism and banditry, describing the claims as false, baseless and misleading.

The scholars stated that the governor of Bauchi State has no connection whatsoever, directly or indirectly, with bandits, stressing that he consistently takes decisive action whenever reports of criminal activities are received.

Imams Abdulrahman Idris and Mohammed Yusuf Adam spoke on behalf of various Islamic groups in the state yesterday while addressing a press conference held at the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ) Secretariat in Bauchi.

They explained that the Muslim community found it necessary to clarify its position based on facts and firsthand knowledge regarding the allegation that the Bauchi State Government supports terrorism and banditry.

According to them, Bauchi State remained one of the most peaceful states in Northern Nigeria, recording very low levels of criminal activity. They noted that the relative peace has encouraged people from neighbouring states to relocate to Bauchi, particularly to the state capital, where many have built homes due to the security enjoyed by residents.

They added that the influx of people fleeing insecurity from other states has led to the establishment of new settlements, where the Bauchi State Government has resettled displaced persons, citing Maraban Liman Katagum, New Nabordo, and New Narabi communities.

The scholars further emphasised that there is no town or forest in Bauchi State serving as a base for terrorist groups or bandits, nor any area that residents cannot access due to bandits’ control or alleged protection.

They stated that no individual or group has ever been arrested in Bauchi State with weapons or food supplies intended for bandits in their hideouts.

Highlighting the Governor’s efforts, the scholars said Governor Bala Mohammed has provided logistics, equipment, vehicles, and funds to security agencies and vigilante groups to combat banditry.

They cited the swift response taken by the governor when bandits appeared in Duguri, Alkaleri local government area, as well as his directive to Imams and Islamic scholars to intensify special prayers for peace across the state.

“There is no bandit group in Bauchi State that has overpowered security agencies or the government. This is due to Allah’s help and the efforts of His Excellency, the governor,” they said.

They also dismissed claims that bandits had approached the Governor or any senior government official with grievances and were ignored, stressing that no bandit hideout exists in the state that security agencies have avoided due to alleged government protection.

On allegations involving Bello Badejo, the scholars clarified that his relationship with the Governor was strictly related to cooperation on security matters and had nothing to do with banditry.

They equally described accusations against the Commissioner of Finance and five other government officials as unfounded, noting that the individuals are known for their good character and peaceful conduct. The scholars also called for their release to enable them to return to their families and continue their official responsibilities.

The Islamic leaders urged members of the public to desist from spreading false stories aimed at tarnishing reputations, warning that Islam forbids mocking those undergoing trials.

They also cautioned politicians against allowing political rivalry to harm innocent people or destabilise the peace of the state.

“Our state has enjoyed peace for many years. We call on everyone to avoid actions that could cause unrest. Conflict is like a forest fire; once ignited, it consumes more than its initiators,” they said.
