IPAC Debunks Claim Of ‘Rainbow Coalition’ For 2027 Elections

The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has dismissed claims credited to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike, that all political parties would align under his leadership in a so-called “rainbow coalition” to support President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 general election.

In a strongly worded press statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Egbeola Wale Martins, IPAC described the claim as unfounded, misleading and a product of the minister’s imagination. The council stated that at no time did it grant Wike, or any individual, the mandate to speak on behalf of political parties in Nigeria or to determine their political alliances or preferences ahead of the 2027 polls.

IPAC stressed that political parties are independent institutions governed by their constitutions, internal structures and democratic processes. According to the council, decisions on coalitions, alliances or endorsements can only be taken by the duly constituted organs of each political parties and not by any single person, regardless of position or influence.

The council further faulted the narrative being promoted by the FCT minister, noting that contrary to his claims, some political parties are independently considering offering unconditional solidarity support to the governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

IPAC revealed that such considerations include the possibility of not fielding governorship candidates as a voluntary sacrifice aimed at restoring peace, stability and effective governance in Rivers State.

It emphasised that these deliberations were entirely the decisions of the concerned political parties and were driven by collective solidarity and the desire to promote lasting peace in the state, rather than by any external influence.

Describing Wike’s claim as disingenuous, IPAC accused the FCT minister of showing little regard in the past for the autonomy and collective interests of political parties, making his sudden assertion of influence over them questionable.

The council warned against any attempt by individuals to hijack or appropriate the collective will of political parties for personal or selfish political ends.

Reaffirming its commitment to multiparty democracy and political pluralism, IPAC urged the general public to disregard the alleged rainbow coalition claim. It advised Nigerians to rely only on official communications from IPAC and the duly authorised leadership of political parties on matters concerning alliances, coalitions and electoral decisions ahead of the 2027 general election.
