Benfica manager José Mourinho has dismissed “soap opera” claims regarding a potential return to Real Madrid this summer.
Madrid recently parted ways with Xabi Alonso after less than eight months in charge, appointing Álvaro Arbeloa, coach of the club’s reserves, as his successor.
When questioned about speculation in Spain regarding a return for the 2026-27 season, Mourinho responded after Benfica’s 2-0 victory over Rio Ave on Saturday: “Don’t count on me for soap operas. There are many good soap operas, but they take too long. If you miss an episode or two, you lose track. Don’t count on me; I don’t watch soap operas.”
The 62-year-old led Madrid to a La Liga title, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Supercup during his three seasons (2010-2013) with the club.
Mourinho took over at Benfica in September and is contracted until June 2027. Currently third in the Primeira Liga, 10 points behind leaders FC Porto, Benfica will face Juventus in the Champions League on Wednesday before hosting his former club, Real Madrid, on January 28.
