Group Warns Against Escalating Industrial Unrest At NEPC

A civil society organisation, Integrity Advocacy for Development Initiative (IADI), has cautioned against narratives that could escalate industrial unrest at the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), urging restraint, fairness, and strict adherence to due process in public discussions on the issue.

In a statement issued to journalists yesterday in Abuja by Christopher Ofomhi, the organisation said that while concerns raised in the public space deserve attention, internal administrative matters should not be prematurely framed in ways that risk undermining public confidence in a strategic national institution.

According to IADI, information currently available in the public domain suggests that the issues under discussion largely relate to staff deployment, management decisions, and internal administrative reforms, which it noted are not uncommon in public sector institutions with nationwide mandates.

The group stressed that such actions, though sometimes contentious, do not on their own constitute proof of misconduct.

IADI further emphasised that allegations remain allegations until they are examined and determined by appropriate statutory and oversight authorities. It added that, as of the time of issuing the statement, no competent authority had made any adverse findings against the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of the NEPC, Mrs Nonye Ayeni.

“At a time when Nigeria is intensifying efforts to diversify its economy through non-oil exports, it is important that internal institutional challenges are addressed through lawful processes and constructive engagement, rather than narratives that may escalate tension or encourage industrial unrest,” the statement said.

While calling for calm, the organisation underscored the importance of staff welfare, transparent communication, and compliance with public service rules as essential elements for sustaining morale and institutional effectiveness. It encouraged NEPC management to continue engaging staff through established administrative mechanisms to address concerns as they arise.

IADI cautioned that actions or narratives capable of destabilising the Council could distract from NEPC’s core mandate of promoting Nigeria’s export diversification agenda and supporting national economic growth.

The organisation therefore called on all stakeholders—including staff, the media, and the general public—to exercise restraint, uphold fairness, and allow due process to guide any review or resolution of the issues.

“Our position is guided solely by the principles of fairness, the rule of law, and the national interest. Strong public institutions are built through dialogue, professionalism, and respect for due process,” the statement concluded.
