Bauchi State is set to witness a major overhaul of its meat production value chain as the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES) moves to construct modern abattoirs across the state this year.
The state coordinator of L-PRES, Musa Adamu, said the planned abattoirs are part of a broader infrastructure drive aimed at strengthening livestock production and repositioning Bauchi’s livestock economy for growth and competitiveness.
In an interview with our correspondent, Adamu said that the project targets critical areas of the livestock sector, including dairy and meat production, as well as small ruminants such as sheep and goats.
To him, the modern abattoirs will be complemented by other facilities, including water points for herders, veterinary clinics and pasture development sites, to ensure healthier animals and safer meat for consumers.
He said the project would also promote value addition by supporting livestock feed processing, particularly through the use of crop residues and locally available materials to improve animal nutrition and productivity.
Musa further disclosed that L-PRES is introducing modern breeding techniques, including artificial insemination, to improve local breeds for faster growth, higher meat yield and increased milk production.
He revealed that work is ongoing on a major livestock centre in Bauchi, with plans to establish a Liquid Nitrogen Plant to support semen preservation and enhance breeding services across the state.
The coordinator added that the Bauchi State Government has approved the construction of a Livestock Service Centre in Galambi, noting that work has reached an advanced stage and is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
Musa commended Governor Bala Mohammed and the Commissioner for Livestock Development, Dr Bala Musa Lukshi, for their support, urging residents to cooperate with the project to ensure its success and long-term impact on the state’s economy.
