The ongoing Kano-Katsina Dual Carriageway project has reached 27 per cent completion, with notable progress recorded following improved funding and renewed attention from the federal government.
The senior special assistant (SSA) to President Bola Tinubu on Community Engagement, Hon. Abdullahi Tanko, disclosed this during an inspection visit to the project site.
He described the highway as a critical infrastructure corridor that would strengthen economic activities between Kano, Katsina and other states in the Northwest region.
According to him, road and transportation infrastructure remain key drivers of economic growth, and the Kano-Katsina road is strategic in enhancing the seamless movement of people, goods and services across the region.
Tanko emphasised that the completion of the project would boost trade, strengthen regional integration and improve socio-economic activities, especially given Kano’s position as a major commercial hub and its proximity to Katsina.
The project spans approximately 157 kilometres and is being developed as a dual carriageway, with two lanes on each side to improve traffic flow, reduce travel time and enhance safety.
The federal controller of works, Muhammad Idris Matinja, explained that the project had previously experienced slow progress due to funding challenges and compensation.
However, recent financial augmentation approved by the federal government has significantly improved the pace of work, revealing that over 27 kilometres of the road have already been constructed.
The project manager of CCECC, Mr Tang Ying, confirmed that construction is progressing steadily.
He commended the Federal Ministry of Works, the Katsina State Government and the host communities for their support and cooperation, noting that land acquisition and compensation issues remain key challenges affecting the pace of construction.
He added that relevant authorities are working to resolve the matter amicably to prevent delays to the project timeline.
Professional bodies, including the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), also participated in the inspection.
Representatives of the bodies affirmed that the construction work meets required engineering standards and quality specifications, noting their continued oversight to ensure compliance with professional and safety regulations.
Although no specific completion date was provided, officials expressed optimism that work would accelerate once compensation matters are fully resolved.
The federal delegation led by the SSA Tanko, also inspected Unguwa-Iliya 17.5 road construction in Kafur local government area of the state, commissioned 2.4 kilometres Kankara road, 1.4 road rehabilitation at Muduru and also commissioned an emergency request of culvert (M.1+775 and KM.2+736) along Katstina-Dutsin-ma Road.
