HERO FEATURE: The Rise Of The “Digital Athlete”

In the past, gaming in Nigeria was mostly seen as a casual way to kill time at a “game centre.” Today, that has changed. Nigeria’s professional esports scene is moving beyond hobby status and into a structured career path where players are treated like professional athletes.

The shift is most visible in the National E-Soccer Pro League Division 2, which officially kicked off on January 17, 2026. This isn’t just a friendly tournament; it’s a high-stakes league where precision and strategy matter as much as they do on a real football pitch.

To match this new level of professionalism, the rewards are growing. A combined 5 million Naira prize pool is currently up for grabs across different divisions. While EA Sports FC remains a fan favourite, the competition is diversifying into “fighting games” like Street Fighter 6 and Mortal Kombat 1, creating space for different types of specialists to earn a living.

Of course, every athlete needs a stadium. Plans were recently unveiled for a dedicated Esports Hub in Yaba, Lagos. Scheduled to open by early next year, this facility will serve as a “training sanctuary”—a place where these new digital athletes can access high-speed internet and professional coaching to sharpen their skills for the global stage.
