Imo At 50: Foundation Empowers 600 Widows, Students

As Imo State begins activities to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the state’s creation, the Myke and Joy Foundation has launched a scheme to support Governor Hope Uzodimma’s achievements, empowering 600 widows with tools and resources to help them sustain themselves.

This is even as it announced the purchase of 50 WAEC and 50 JAMB forms for students drawn from the Ohaji-Egbema/Oguta/Oru West federal constituency of the state.

The founder of the Hope Uzodimma Legacy Empowerment Scheme, Engr Myke Onyekachi, told journalists in Owerri yesterday that it was part of the foundation’s broader efforts to support women and vulnerable groups in the state.

Other philanthropic activities include education support, skills development and economic empowerment programmes.

According to him, the reasons for supporting Governor Uzodimma with the empowerment programmes was to honour his exemplary leadership in the state.

He said the empowerment scheme was a deliberate and strategic investment in human capital within the Ohaji-Egbema/Oguta/Oru West federal constituency and a tribute to Uzodimma who had shown that leadership was about service and that power was a responsibility to better lives.

Onyekachi commended Uzodimma for what he described as several laudable projects including the Skillup Imo Project that had equipped thousands of Imo people with digital skills.

According to him, under the legacy scheme, 50 persons will be selected from Ohaji-Egbema/Oguta/Oru West federal constituency, a total of 150 people to acquire skills in fashion designing, catering, digital marketing, graphic design, welding, carpentry, phone and computer repairs, and other vocational trades that are high in demand in today’s economy.

He said, “I formally announce the launch of the Hope Uzodimma Legacy Empowerment Scheme, an initiative conceived to honor exemplary leadership, celebrate our state’s golden jubilee, and create lasting opportunities for the people of our federal constituency. This is a call to service, a commitment to our people, and a tribute to visionary governance.

“Just one week ago, in my beloved Mgbala Agwa community, I had the privilege of registering fifty students for the West African Examinations Council examinations. These young minds, filled with dreams and aspirations, represent the future of our great state. Yesterday, I was honored to empower six hundred widows in Agwa, providing them with the tools and resources necessary to rebuild their lives and contribute meaningfully to our society.

“These interventions, though modest in scope, have reinforced my belief that true leadership is not measured by what we accumulate for ourselves, but by what we give back to those who need it most. They have also strengthened my resolve to do more, to think bigger, and to create lasting legacies that will outlive us all.

“As Imo State celebrates her fiftieth anniversary, we are presented with a unique opportunity to reflect on our journey as a people, to celebrate our achievements, and to chart a new course for the generations yet unborn. Fifty years is not just a number; it is a testament to resilience, unity, and the unwavering spirit of the Imo people.

“It is in answer to this question that I have conceived the Hope Uzodimma Legacy Empowerment Scheme. This initiative is not just another empowerment program; it is a deliberate and strategic investment in the human capital of our federal constituency and a tribute to a leader who has demonstrated that governance can be both transformative and inclusive.

“Senator Hope Uzodimma, the Executive Governor of Imo State, has shown that leadership is about service, that power is a responsibility, and that the measure of a government is in the lives it touches and transforms. Under his watch, Imo State has experienced unprecedented development in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and youth empowerment”. Onyekachi said.

Furthermore, he announced that the initiative will be an annual event and expressed hope that it will grow in scope and impact in the coming years.
