University of Cross River State (UNICROSS) is awaiting the accreditation of 18 new academic programmes by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

This was disclosed at the weekend by the vice chancellor, Prof. Francisca Bassey, during a presentation of the institution’s report to the Cross River State commissioner of Education, Senator Stephen Odey.

The vice chancellor stated that the accreditation exercise was conducted by the NUC in November and December 2025, and covered newly introduced programmes and older departments that had previously been denied accreditation.

“We have addressed previous accreditation issues and are optimistic that the programs will receive full accreditation,” Professor Bassey said.

She highlighted the university’s achievements, including the approval and commencement of minimum wage payments for staff.

The vice chancellor’s presentation included updates on infrastructural developments, such as the construction of an entrepreneurship workshop, laboratories, and administrative improvements.

She stressed that the university has also acquired a broadcasting licence and established e-libraries across campuses.

She enumerated challenges faced by the institution to include inadequate funding and security concerns.

Professor Bassey appealed to the state government to assume responsibility for staff salaries and provide improved funding to ease the university’s financial burden.

She told the education commissioner that the university has implemented its first school fee increase since 2009, citing rising costs of goods and services nationwide.

“This is a necessary step to ensure the university can provide quality education to its students,” Professor Bassey said.

In his remarks the state Commissioner for Education, Senator Stephen Odey, lauded the university management for their progress and assured them of the ministry’s continued support. “I am confident that the programmes will receive full accreditation,” he said.

The commissioner promised to lead a delegation to UNICROSS to assess developments and challenges. The presentation was attended by UNICROSS management team and internal Governing Council members.
