A 30-year-old man, identified as Ashahabu Ubale, has died from gas suffocation while attempting to retrieve a burning gas cylinder from a well in Gwarzo local government area of Kano State.
According to a statement issued by the public relations officer of the Kano State Fire Service, Saminu Yusif Abdullahi, the sad incident occurred on Sunday, February 8, 2026, at Saulawa Quarters in Gwarzo Town.
Abdullahi said the Emergency Response Unit (Control Room) of the Service received a distress report of a rescue operation in the area.
He explained that the call was made by one Alhaji Dan Dauda Gwarzo, who reported that a man had entered a well during an emergency situation, noting that, following the report, a rescue team from the Gwarzo Branch Office of the Fire Service was mobilised to the scene.
“Upon arrival, the rescue team found a man of about 30 years of age, identified as Ashahabu Ubale, who had entered the well with the intention of retrieving a burning gas cylinder that had been thrown inside,” the statement said.
The PRO disclosed that during the process, the gas cylinder opened and released gas inside the well, displacing oxygen and causing the victim to suffocate.
He explained that, the victim was reportedly rescued unconscious but was later confirmed dead. “His remains were subsequently handed over to Police Constable Muhammad Zakiyyu of the Gwarzo Police Division.
“The Kano State Fire Service, under the leadership of its Director, Alhaji Sani Anas, expressed condolences to the family of the deceased,” he noted.
The agency also warned members of the public against entering wells or confined spaces without proper safety measures, stressing that such actions could result in fatal consequences.
