Operatives of the Imo State Police Command have arrested two brothers, Lucky and Uzoma Amadi, for allegedly killing their elder brother, Orindu and burying him in a shallow grave.
The incident occurred in the Umuokpi kindred of Umuchimanyiri village, Obazu Mbieri, in Mbaitoli local government area of the state.
Already, the youths of the community have forced the two brothers to exhume the corpse of Orindu, buried in a shallow grave within their compound.
An eyewitness, Chidiebube Okeoma, said it took the intervention of policemen from the Mbieri Police Division to save the two brothers from jungle justice yesterdayy after their confession.
Village sources said suspicions began to brew after the two brothers repeatedly said their elder brother, Orindu, travelled.
They were alleged to have mentioned different places when questioned, even as villagers were worried that no one could reach Orindu despite several phone calls to his line.
It was gathered that the youths, yesterday morning, stormed the Amadi compound and demanded explanations from the duo, or face their wrath.
It was in the bid to avoid lynching that they allegedly confessed that they had murdered Orindu and buried him in a shallow grave.
According to the suspects, Orindu caused the death of their father about 10 years ago in questionable circumstances.
After the confession, the two brothers took the youths to the part of their compound where they had hurriedly buried Orindu’s remains in a shallow grave.
Already, the exhumed corpse had totally decomposed into a skeleton.
However, the infuriated youths forced them to bear the corpse remains as exhibits on their necks like chains.
It was a private citizen who immediately alerted the Police, who arrived and saved the brothers from death.
An eyewitness, Chidiebube Okeoma, said he was alerted by someone and rushed down to the community.
He said, “One of the brothers, who is a tricycle operator, blamed late Orindu for the alleged death of their father about 10 years ago.
“The villagers said that the suspects, in a bid to conceal the murder of their elder brother, lied to them that he had travelled.
“Safe for the arrival of the Mbieri Police Division, they may have been lynched by the youths”, he said.
Efforts to speak with the Police spokesperson for Imo State, Henry Okoye, proved abortive, as he did not answer the repeated calls placed to his phone.
Meanwhile, the villagers have called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of the two brothers for what they described as taboo in their land. The two brothers are currently in Police custody.
