The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has moved to strengthen professional capacity and leadership development among its members through a proposed strategic partnership with the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development (Centre LSD).

The initiative was formalised on Tuesday when the NUJ FCT Council paid a courtesy visit to the leadership of the African Centre for Leadership, Strategy and Development.

Welcoming the delegation, the Executive Director of the Centre, Mr. Monday Osasah, expressed the organisation’s willingness to partner with the NUJ FCT Council in promoting leadership development, accountability and good governance.

Osasah explained that the Centre, established in 2003, was founded to empower citizens to drive societal transformation. According to him, its programmes were designed to address three major gaps in governance and development: the absence of strategic leadership, lack of effective strategy, and inappropriate leadership practices.

He disclosed that the Centre operates a leadership school that offers free training, noting that about 3,211 persons have so far benefited from its programmes. He added that the Centre currently runs training hubs in Benin, Warri, Port Harcourt and Abakaliki.

The Executive Director further revealed that the Centre also provides tailor-made international training programmes. He stressed that effective strategy development must be anchored on a clearly defined mission and proper accreditation, adding that public policies can only deliver meaningful results at the grassroots when leaders understand and apply strategic thinking in policy implementation.

Osasah assured the NUJ FCT Council of the Centre’s readiness to collaborate in the training and retraining of journalists, as well as in providing mentorship programmes to prepare members for leadership responsibilities.

In her remarks, the Chairman of the NUJ FCT Council, Comrade Grace Ike, said the Council remained open to partnerships that promote societal development while strengthening ethical and responsible journalism.

“We believe the media has a critical role to play in amplifying initiatives that support good governance, leadership development and sustainable progress across the continent,” she said.

Comrade Ike also expressed the Council’s willingness to partner with the LSD Centre to ensure continuous training of journalists for effective leadership roles.

She noted that the Centre’s focus on governance, leadership, strategy and development aligns closely with the media’s responsibility in promoting accountability, public enlightenment and national growth.

“We would like to learn more about your programmes, ongoing activities and the specific expectations from this proposed partnership. This will help us determine how best our members can support your visibility and communication goals in a structured and professional manner,” she said.

She added that the Council is open to discussions on a practical framework that will define the scope of media coverage, roles and possible areas for long-term collaboration between both organisations.

Members of the Centre’s management team were also absent and they highlighted potential areas of mutual benefit and strategic cooperation between the NUJ FCT Council and the LSD Centre.
