The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN) has sounded a fresh warning over the dangers of iron deficiency in pregnancy.

It advised expectant mothers to eat more iron-rich foods and attend regular antenatal clinics to avoid life-threatening complications.

Dr. Zainab Kwaru, president of MWAN, made the call in an interview with LEADERSHIP on the sidelines of the association’s National Executive Council Meeting in Bauchi.

She described iron deficiency as one of the leading causes of maternal complications in Nigeria, stressing that many of the risks associated with pregnancy can be significantly reduced through proper nutrition and routine medical care.

“Iron deficiency remains a major concern for pregnant women. Adequate intake of iron-rich foods and consistent antenatal check-ups are critical to preventing avoidable complications,” she said.

Dr. Kwaru emphasized that strengthening maternal health outcomes is central to MWAN’s mission, noting that the association continues to play a pivotal role in improving healthcare delivery across the country.

Speaking on the theme of the meeting, “Impactful Leadership: Advancing Equity, Resilience, and Women-centred Health in Nigeria,” she underscored the need for policies and programmes that prioritise women’s health and close persistent gaps in access to quality care.

According to her, advancing equity in healthcare means ensuring that no woman is left behind, particularly during pregnancy, when timely interventions can mean the difference between life and death.

She reaffirmed MWAN’s commitment to advocacy, professional leadership and community engagement as tools to drive reforms in maternal and child health.

As Nigeria continues to grapple with maternal health challenges, MWAN’s message is clear, better nutrition, early care and sustained leadership are vital to safeguarding the lives of mothers across the nation.
