Sultan-led NSCIA Demands Urgent Review Of 2027 Election Timetable

The Nigeria Supreme Council of Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has issued a stern demand for an immediate revision of the 2027 general election timetable, which was unveiled recently by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The apex Islamic body, under the leadership of the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, expressed profound disapproval over the scheduling of key electoral dates, specifically highlighting the clash with significant Islamic holy periods.

In a strongly worded statement released on Sunday and signed by its Secretary-General, Professor Is-haq Oloyede, the Council voiced its condemnation of INEC’s decision to hold the 2027 Presidential Election during the holy month of Ramadan. Furthermore, the Council expressed grave concern that the gubernatorial elections are currently slated to coincide with what is described as a “probable Eidul Fitr day,” a major Islamic festival marking the end of Ramadan.

The statement articulated the depth of dissatisfaction within the Muslim community, noting: “In particular, the Council appreciates the avalanche of complaints lodged at its secretariat, following the announcement by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that not only will the presidential election hold during Ramadan, but also the gubernatorial election is slated for a probable Eidul Fitr day.

“While to the Council this audacious announcement by INEC was not unexpected, it is quite interesting that INEC has shown Muslims early what to expect. We are watching very closely and expecting an immediate review. This passage underscores the Council’s perception of a deliberate oversight or disregard for Muslim sensitivities,” the group stated.

The NSCIA also conveyed its aspiration that the heightened Islamic awareness and vigilance, which has been fostered by recent national and international events concerning Nigeria, will not diminish among the Ummah (the global Muslim community). Referencing the Quranic verse, “Inna ma’al ‘usri yusra” (Verily, with every hardship there is ease), the Council urged Muslims to remain steadfast in their faith, drawing parallels with the early Muslims who faced similar existential challenges.

The statement emphasised the importance of sincerity, calmness, commitment to virtues, and the power of prayer as means through which Allah will improve circumstances and grant solace.

The Council concluded its message with a prayer for the continued protection of Nigeria, reiterating its expectation for a swift and positive response from INEC regarding the contentious election schedule.
