Youth Group Vows To Defend, Promote Democracy In South‑South

Ahead of the 2027 election, the National Youth Alliance (NYA) has expressed its resolve to promote good governance and defend Nigeria’s democracy.

President of the group, Ambassador Aliyu Bin Abbas, stated this at the inauguration of 123 local government coordinators for the South‑South geopolitical zone.

The ceremony took place at Eleganza Event Centre, Asaba, Delta State, on Monday 16 February 2026. “NYA is a platform for young Nigerians to defend democracy and prepare for the future of the country,” Ambassador Bin Abbas said.

He described the inauguration as a significant step towards promoting the active engagement of youth and women in Nigeria’s political and governance processes. Emphasising the movement’s neutrality, he said: “We are not pro‑government, we are not anti‑government; we are against the system that has prevented progress. Nigeria belongs to all of us, and the youth must be ready to lead tomorrow.”

Ambassador Bin Abbas explained that NYA initially sought to register as a political party to give young people and women a stronger voice ahead of the 2027 elections, but the application was denied by the Independent National Electoral Commission.

“Even though our constitutional rights were denied, we will continue as a movement to mobilise youth and women, and support candidates who align with our principles,” he said.

Reflecting on his experience, he noted: “I have served as a special adviser to former Vice‑President Atiku Abubakar, and as deputy director in charge of 19 northern states during the PDP presidential campaign in 2023. But today, we are among the aggrieved young Nigerians demanding a better future.”

The National Youth Alliance aims to mentor young leaders, promote active civic engagement, and ensure women have equal opportunities in politics.

Ambassador Bin Abbas stressed the movement’s commitment to preparing youth for leadership positions and ensuring capable successors for the nation.

In a goodwill message, Honourable Bridget Anyafulu, member of the Delta State House of Assembly, praised the initiative.
“The youth and women must work together. Governor Sheriff Oborevwori believes in youth empowerment, which is why young people in Delta State are represented in the governor’s cabinet and actively participating in governance.”

Other dignitaries, including Senator Ned Nwoko and Professor Victor A. Okondi, encouraged the NYA to pursue its programmes peacefully and constructively, emphasising the need for unity, mentorship and strategic preparation of future leaders.

The inauguration highlighted the role of young Nigerians in shaping democratic governance. Attendees were urged to use the platform to advocate for transparency, accountability and inclusivity in politics while maintaining respect for existing leadership.

The event concluded with a commitment from all coordinators to uphold NYA principles, ensuring that youth and women across the South‑South region are engaged, empowered and prepared to contribute to Nigeria’s political and socio‑economic development. The inauguration brought together young leaders, politicians and stakeholders committed to creating opportunities for youth involvement and mentoring the next generation of leaders.
