HOW I OVERCAME: Hassan: My Wife Rescued Me From Gambling

Before he turned to gambling and lost everything, Hassan was a successful trader and a loving father.

His family was proud of him as he adequately catered for them. As a lover of education, he never defaulted in paying his children’s fees or anything else they needed to be comfortable in school.

On several occasions, the proprietors of his children’s schools recognised and honoured him at the end of sessions’ parties for being committed to the educational advancement of his children.

However, all of these were swept underground when Hassan suddenly switched from his flourishing trading to betting and gambling.

What started as a harmless pastime soon became an obsession that devoured his savings, his business capital and eventually his dignity.

On a daily basis, Hassan chased “one last win” that never came. He sold household items quietly, borrowed and withdrew from family life. The joy in his home faded, tension mounted, excuses were made and he resorted to late-night keeping.

Within a short time, his once-thriving trading business had become a shadow of itself. Hassan became indebted. He avoided friends and creditors came after him.

While his travails persisted, his wife, Zainab, refused to abandon him. Instead of walking away, she confronted the challenge with courage and encouraging words, helping Hassan admit his problems.

Gently, she steered him away from the wrong friends. At first, he resisted, but Zainab did not give up on him.

Why was she doing all this? Zainab would tell Hassan’s family, “I need a husband in my home; I need a father for my children. I cannot carry his load because I was not created to do so.”

Her refusal to shame him and her quiet emotional support began to pay off. One day, Hassan broke down before his wife and wept uncontrollably. That night, he apologised to Zainab and her children for the embarrassment he had caused them.

For the first time in a long time, Hassan stopped going to the gambling centres. He returned to the family, assisting the wife in her petty trade.

Recovery was not quick. There were relapses, emotional outbursts and moments of despair. Still, Zainab stood firm, refocusing their finances and helping him rediscover purpose through daily paid jobs. Then came weeks without gambling and days of honest labour, coupled with wise spending.

Hassan began to rebuild — first his self-respect, then his livelihood.

Looking back at those horrible days, Hassan warned others about the destructive lure of gambling. Though scars remain, his home and life are once again filled with hope.

He said, “My recovery began with the steadfast love of my wife, who chose restoration over abandonment — proving that sometimes, redemption starts with one person who refuses to give up.”
