The Kano State Government has flagged off the distribution of 99 trucks conveying 54,600 bags of 50kg rice to residents across the state as part of its annual Ramadan welfare intervention.
Governor Abba Yusuf launched the exercise recently at Maganda Road, Kano, saying the initiative was designed to cushion the economic hardship faced by the less privileged during the holy month of Ramadan.
According to a statement issued by the governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature, the intervention would reach beneficiaries in all 44 local government areas of the state, alongside selected groups and individuals.
Speaking at the flag-off, Governor Yusuf described the programme as a long-standing tradition of his administration aimed at providing food support to residents during the fasting period. He explained that 44 trucks were earmarked for direct allocation to the 44 LGAs, while the remaining consignments would be distributed to vulnerable groups across the state.
The governor said committees had been constituted at both state and local government levels to ensure transparency and accountability in the distribution process. According to him, the state-level committee is chaired by the Secretary to the State Government, with the Ministry of Agriculture serving as the coordinating body.
Governor Yusuf also appealed to the Federal Government, corporate organisations and well-meaning individuals to complement the state’s efforts in easing the burden on citizens during Ramadan.
In his remarks, Deputy President of the Senate, Barau Jibrin, who was in company of the governor commended the State Government for prioritising the welfare of the people, noting that the initiative would reduce anxiety among residents during the fasting period.
Also speaking, the Chairperson of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Kano State, Hajiya Sa’adatu Soja, praised the inclusive approach adopted by the government and assured that local councils would ensure the items reached the intended beneficiaries.
