Yenagoa, Bayelsa State – Over 100 referees from the Bayelsa State Referees Council have successfully completed a comprehensive refresher course, equipping them with enhanced officiating skills ahead of the 8th edition of Nigeria’s premier grassroots football event, the Bayelsa Governor’s Football Tournament, also known as the Prosperity Cup.
The two-day programme, a collaborative effort between Prosperity Cup organisers and the Ministry of Sports Development, featured both practical and theoretical sessions.
Renowned CAF Instructor and NFF Referees Committee Member, Chukwudi Chukwujekwu, expressed his satisfaction with the referees’ enthusiasm. He lauded the organisers for their unprecedented initiative in providing pre-tournament training, highlighting it as a significant step towards fair play. Chukwujekwu also noted the success story of Rachel Onyekwere, a previous trainee who has become a top centre referee.
Fellow CAF Instructor, Felicia Chibugwu, praised the organisers for their commitment to improving officiating standards, stating that this year’s tournament will benefit from umpires equipped with modern techniques. She also expressed delight at the participation of young referees aged between eight and twelve, anticipating a reduction in controversial decisions.
Participants, including Kuote Sinivie and 15-year-olds Commander Daniela and Sunny Blessing, thanked the Bayelsa State government and organisers for the “transformative initiative,” which introduced them to the latest laws of the game.
The programme concluded with the presentation of certificates to all participants. Training for medical personnel is scheduled to commence on Friday, 20th February 2026.
