Electricity consumers across Nigeria’s South-East region were plunged into darkness on Thursday following a system collapse affecting supply within the distribution network of Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).

The disruption occurred at about 11:54 a.m., cutting power to Enugu State, Abia State, Ebonyi State, Anambra State and Imo State.

In a statement issued Thursday, the Group Head, Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh, confirmed that the incident affected all subsidiary service providers under the company.

“The Enugu Electricity Distribution Company Plc (EEDC) wishes to inform its customers across the South-East that it experienced a partial system collapse today, at about 11:54 a.m.

“This resulted in the power outage currently experienced by customers served by our subsidiary companies—MainPower, TransPower, FirstPower, NewEra, and EastLand.”

Ezeh explained that the company had yet to determine the immediate cause of the collapse but was engaging relevant authorities to restore supply.

“The cause of the collapse is yet to be ascertained, but we are on standby, awaiting restoration of supply. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience this development has caused our esteemed customers,” he added.

The outage followed a similar incident reported by Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, which also recorded loss of supply from the national grid earlier on Thursday.

Recurring grid instability has continued to raise concerns among stakeholders in the Nigerian power sector, particularly businesses in major commercial hubs such as Aba and Onitsha, where operators increasingly rely on costly alternative energy sources.

As of the time of filing this report, electricity supply had yet to be restored in the affected states.
