The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has issued a stark warning against touching victims of electrical shocks, advising residents to steer clear of live wires as well.
NERC shared this urgent message on its X account Monday, highlighting electricity’s deadly power and how impulsive rescues without precautions can cause further casualties.
The alert stated: “Safety above all: Don’t turn into the next statistic! Electricity shows no mercy. Seeing a fallen live wire or someone in shock might urge you to act fast—but pause! Grabbing the victim bare-handed or pulling them away risks channeling the current into you.”
Essential steps from NERC: Avoid contact—never handle a live wire or the person directly; stay distant—keep back and direct others to do so; summon help—call your local electricity distribution company (DisCo) or emergency services right away.
The commission encouraged responsible behavior by deferring to professionals in electrical incidents, emphasising that these measures protect lives and curb additional dangers.
