Anambra State governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has closed the New Auto Spare Parts Association (NASPA) Market, Nkwo Nnewi, Nnewi-North LGA of the state for one week.
According to the commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, the market closure would last from midnight of Monday, 23rd February, 2026, to Monday, 2nd March, 2026.
The closure of the market Mefor said “followed low compliance with Mr Governor, Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo’s order to end Monday sit-at-home in Anambra State”.
The Onitsha Main Market in the state’s commercial hub -Onitsha – was the first casualty of the governor’s anger over the continued closure of shops by traders in virtually all major markets in the state to observe sit-at-home every Monday as a mark of solidarity with the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in his travails in connection with the terrorism charges for which he is currently serving life jail in Sokoto prison.
Soludo had shut down the Onitsha Main Market for one week last month, and, even warned the traders that if they continued to lock up shops to observe sit-at-home on Mondays his government would convert the market into an annex of the state’s vigilant group known as Agunechemba.
Soludo’s order shutting down the New Auto Spare-parts Association Nkwo Nnewi Market was handed down to the traders on his behalf by the special adviser (SA)to the Governor on Trade and Markets, Chief Evarist Uba, in company of the commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, and special adviser (SA)to the Governor on Security, AVM Ben Chiobi(Rtd), and, chairman of Nnewi-North LGA Mayor, Hon. Echezona Anazodo.
According to the governor’s aides “Traders and customers are advised to avoid the market until next Monday to avoid issues with law enforcement agents.
“The market may face further closure if compliance is not substantial by next Monday, when the market reopens”, Mefor’s statement reads further.
