The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) said it has completed five groundbreaking research projects poised for intellectual property protection and market deployment.
Aminu made the disclosure while welcoming stakeholders to the final peer review stage of PTDF’s Annual Oil and Gas Research Grant Competition and Endowment programmes, in Abuja on Wednesday.
Aminu described the projects’ high commercial potential as a milestone in Nigeria’s energy innovation drive.
He highlighted that the showcased research addresses critical industry challenges with strong commercialisation prospects.
According to him, key projects included an integrated pipeline monitoring system using Li-Fi, UAV, and DSP technologies for defect detection and remediation; carbon nanotube-enhanced perovskite solar cells and plasmonics dye-sensitised cells; sustainable bioenergy from non-edible oil seeds; pyrolysis and catalytic hydrogenation processes to convert biomass, plastic waste, and bitumen into fuels and chemicals; and geological studies of Cretaceous source rocks in Nigeria’s Middle Benue Trough. According to him, two grant awardees and three Endowment streams emerged from rigorous national competitions.
The PTDF boss recalled that the agency, established under Act 25 of 1973 and amended in 1990, is mandated to build Nigerian competencies in the oil and gas sector through indigenous technology development. He explained that the programmes have stringent criteria, requiring Nigerian lead researchers with locally domiciled projects vetted by steering committees or university panels.
Aminu stated that outcomes prioritised patents, publications, and practical petroleum solutions as key performance benchmarks, with PTDF facilitating IPR filings at the Federal Ministry of Trade and Investments.
He commended the research teams for demonstrating professionalism despite various challenges, describing the peer review as a celebration of excellence and appealed to stakeholders to support scaling these innovations for industry adoption, spin-off enterprises, job creation, and in-country knowledge transfer.
The executive secretary positioned the projects as viable pathways to sustainable energy growth. He expressed gratitude to guests, the research steering committee, subject matter experts, and PTDF staff for their roles in ensuring industry-relevant outcomes.
In various goodwill messages,
representatives from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC), Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), TETFund, rallied behind the PTDF, stressing collaboration to turn research into deployable solutions despite persistent infrastructure shortfalls.
They highlighted the need for policy alignment, technology transfer, and local capacity to advance the nation’s energy sector.
The NUPRC chief executive, Orisemeyiwa Eyesan, who was represented by her senior technical assistant, Allagor Preye, lauded the PTDF for boosting research credibility, influencing policy, and fostering continuous collaboration to promote energy security.
On his part, , the executive secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Sonny Echono, represented by Saaban Labaran, reiterated support for strengthening Nigeria’s research ecosystem through collaboration.
Goodwill messages were also delivered by representatives of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, the National Board for Technology Incubation, the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board, and the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority.
The emphasis on intellectual property and commercialisation comes at a critical time for Nigeria’s energy industry, which faces declining oil production, infrastructure vandalism and the global push toward decarbonisation.
By focusing on locally driven innovation, from pipeline integrity to renewable energy materials, the PTDF ES said the fund is positioning itself as a strategic bridge between academia and the oilfields, as well as between fossil fuels and the emerging energy transition landscape.
