February 26th, 2026 marks a significant milestone: ten years since Gianni Infantino took the helm as FIFA President. While his tenure has seen global initiatives, Africa, in particular, has experienced a remarkable period of growth and development, fueled by strategic investment and a renewed focus on grassroots football.
The cornerstone of this transformation is the FIFA Forward Program, launched in 2016. This ambitious initiative has provided unprecedented financial and expert support to football federations worldwide. By the end of 2026, a staggering $5 billion will have been made available for development purposes globally, with over $1.2 billion specifically channeled into African football.
This substantial investment has manifested in tangible infrastructure projects across the continent.
In just ten years, 203 infrastructure projects have been completed. This includes the construction, renovation, or upgrade of 74 technical centers and headquarters, strengthening the administrative and developmental base for local football.
The landscape of pitches has also been revolutionized with 99 artificial turf pitches installed, providing modern playing surfaces. Furthermore, 59 stadiums and stands have undergone significant renovations, enhancing the matchday experience for fans and players alike.
A prime example of this impact is the June 2024 inauguration of the Juba National Stadium in South Sudan. A $6.9 million investment under the FIFA Forward program transformed the venue into a 7,000-capacity stadium meeting CAF standards, boasting a FIFA-certified artificial turf pitch, modern dressing rooms, and media facilities.
Beyond infrastructure, the Forward program has ignited competition at all levels, funding or launching 51 competitions-related projects. From grassroots festivals in Burkina Faso to women’s provincial championships in South Africa and youth tournaments across the continent, these initiatives are nurturing talent and fostering participation.
Looking ahead, the opening of the Africa hub in Rabat, Morocco on July 25th, 2025, signifies FIFA’s commitment to an even closer working relationship with the 54 African Federations, ensuring sustained development and a bright future for African football. Infantino’s decade has truly been a game-changer for the beautiful game on the African continent.
