American actress and filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal’s The Bride, described as a ‘gothic dark romance’, is to be released in theatres on March 6. Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein has inspired numerous film adaptations, gaining worldwide popularity. The Bride is one of them.
Described by critics as ‘the punk rock’ interpretation of Frankenstein, the movie, which was also inspired by the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein, premiered in London at the Empire Leicester Square on February 26 this year.
The horror comedy is set in 1930s Chicago. The storyline follows Frankenstein, who asks the famous scientist Dr Euphronius to help him create a companion. After giving life to a murdered woman to be the Bride of Frankenstein, a romance brews, as well as police interest and social change.
The cast will include her brother, Jake Gyllenhaal, and her husband, Peter Sarsgaard. Other prominent actors include Christian Bale, Jessie Buckley, Annette Bening and Penélope Cruz.
Comments from critics so far after the movie’s launch have been generally positive. Many have complimented Maggie Glylenhaal on this project, as well as the two main characters of the film, who are Academy Award nominees.
