There was outrage and tears flowed as Police Secondary School in Minna Niger State fired 13 casual teachers who were on temporary appointment for over 12 years.
LEADERSHIP gathered that most of the teachers were on temporary employment with the school for over 12 years and were relieved of their employments without being given any notice.
It was learnt that 38 temporary teachers had been working for the organization with the assurance that they would be permanently employed when the go ahead for recruitment was given by the Force Education Department in Abuja.
Some of the teachers who spoke on condition of anonymity stated that when opportunity for recruitment came they “engage Youth Corp members to take over our jobs, The school also retain 17 of our colleagues but on temporary basis and paid them for two months” .
“All the 38 teachers are university graduates and holders of the National Certificate in Education NCE with some of us widows we have being for over a decade “ the teachers claimed.
The Commandant of the School could not be reached but the Chairman of the Parents Teachers Association PTA of the School, Alhaji Sulaiman Mohammed confirmed the story saying that efforts to make the school management to change its stand especially when all the affected teachers have been doing “very well and dedicated to their jobs” was abortive.
The PTA chairman said initially the PTA wanted to take over the payment of their salaries ” but we discovered that it will not be sustainable” because the graduates among them earn N40,000 monthly while the NCE holders collected N30,000 monthly.
