US President, Donald Trump appeared at a White House event on Monday with a noticeable red rash on the right side of his neck, prompting questions about his health.

A photograph taken during a Medal of Honor presentation ceremony showed a red patch with several brownish scabs visible above the collar of the 79-year-old president — the oldest person ever elected to the office.

In a statement to AFP, White House physician Sean Barbabella, said the redness was linked to a routine medical treatment.

“President Trump is using a very common cream on the right side of his neck, which is a preventative skin treatment, prescribed by the White House Doctor,” Barbabella said. He added that the president is expected to use the treatment for one week, and that the redness could persist for several weeks.

The rash was observed following a busy weekend for the president, during which he ordered US military strikes on Iran.

Health concerns surrounding Trump have drawn attention in recent months. He has previously been seen with bruises on his hands, which the White House attributed to aspirin use. Observers have also noted swelling in his legs and several apparent moments of dozing off during public events.

Last summer, the White House disclosed that swelling in Trump’s legs had been diagnosed as chronic venous insufficiency — a common condition in which damaged vein valves cause blood to pool in the lower limbs, leading to swelling, cramping and skin changes.

The White House has not indicated that the neck rash is connected to any broader medical issue.
